Vascular Lesion Treatments (Fotona)
Fotona vascular laser treatments target visible blood vessels such as spider veins, broken capillaries, and vascular lesions by delivering controlled heat directly into the vessel.
The laser energy is absorbed by the blood (oxyhemoglobin), causing the vessel to coagulate and gradually be reabsorbed by the body, leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.
Over time, this results in clearer, more even-toned skin.
Proper preparation and aftercare are essential for safe treatment and optimal results.
Pre-Treatment Care
Skin Preparation
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least 2–4 weeks prior
- Use SPF 30+ daily leading up to treatment
Product Restrictions
- Avoid retinoids, AHA/BHA, and exfoliating products for 5–7 days prior
- Avoid chemical peels, laser treatments, or aggressive exfoliation for at least 2 weeks prior
Medical Considerations
- Avoid treatment if you have used Accutane within the last 6 months
- Inform your provider if you have a history of hyperpigmentation or sensitivity
- Avoid treatment if the area is irritated, inflamed, or infected
- Discontinue photosensitizing medications if medically appropriate
Post-Treatment Care
What to Expect
- Mild redness and warmth in the treated area
- Slight swelling
- Treated vessels may: darken or appear more visible initially, then gradually fade over days to weeks
This is a normal response – the vessel has been treated and is being cleared by the body.
First 24–48 Hours
- Avoid heat (hot showers, saunas, workouts)
- Avoid friction or pressure on the treated area
- Avoid touching or manipulating vessels
- Use gentle skincare only
Ongoing Care (5–7 Days+)
- Avoid sun exposure and apply SPF 30+ daily
- Avoid retinoids, acids, and active skincare for at least 5–7 days
- Do not pick, scratch, or irritate the area
- Resume normal skincare gradually as the skin calms
General Care
- Keep skin hydrated and supported
- Makeup may be applied if the skin is intact
- Avoid excessive heat or vascular triggers during early healing
Supporting Your Results
Vascular treatments rely on your body’s ability to clear and remodel treated vessels. This process continues after your appointment.
Support Circulation + Healing
- Stay well hydrated
- Light movement (walking) supports circulation and lymphatic flow
Reduce Vascular Triggers
For several days post-treatment, try to minimize:
- Alcohol
- Excess heat (saunas, hot yoga)
- Spicy foods (for facial vessels/rosacea-prone clients)
These can temporarily increase vascular activity and redness.
Nutritional Support
Support skin and vessel health with:
- Antioxidant-rich foods (berries, leafy greens)
- Healthy fats (support skin integrity)
- Balanced, anti-inflammatory nutrition
Lifestyle Considerations
- Avoid excessive heat exposure and flushing triggers
- Maintain consistent treatment intervals if recommended
- Protect your skin from ongoing sun damage
Treatment Notes
- Results are gradual – vessels fade over time as the body clears them
- Some vessels may require multiple treatments depending on size and depth
- Temporary darkening or increased visibility immediately after treatment is normal
- New vessels can form over time due to genetics, sun exposure, or lifestyle factors
