PRF: Turn Back The Signs of Time, Naturally

Dark and hollow under eyes, facial laxity, thinning hair… *sigh*. These inevitable signs of aging lead us on the hunt for remedies to turn back the clock and restore youthfulness we once took for granted. These most common first signs of aging are a result of a decrease in collagen. Once we hit 20, our yearly collagen production starts to decrease by 1-2% per year. This may not sound like a lot, but judging by how quickly we start seeing changes in our face, hair, nails, and body, it’s actually a significant number and why preventative aging tactics like protecting your skin against the sun, pollutants, and using high-quality skincare are so crucial.

Collagen is the protein we take for granted in our youth and what gives our face structure, plumpness, and that youthful glow. When looking for a way to turn back the clock on aging, PRF takes first place in being the safest, most natural, and tried and true solution.

Other Contributors to Collagen Loss

In addition to simply getting older, excess sun exposure and smoking are significant contributors to rapidly speeding up signs of aging. Poor diet choices, unhealthy stress levels, and pollution are also factors.

The PRF-Collagen Connection

PRF, or Platelet-Rich Fibrin, is PRP 2.0. PRF is a matrix of white blood cells and growth factors derived from your body’s plasma, that when injected back into the skin or scalp triggers a healing response in the form of collagen, cell turnover, and elastin in the body. This response is prolonged, meaning growth factors triggered by the plasma continue to release up to a week post-injection. This means results are not only better than with PRP, but last longer.

PRP vs. PRF

The biggest difference between PRP and PRF is the centrifuge in which the blood is spun to obtain all those healthy components to re-inject into the skin or scalp. PRP is spun faster than PRF, which can result in healthy cells becoming damaged and too much separation. Because of how carefully PRF is spun, it is a better choice for deeper injections like the cheeks or scalp area. In addition, PRP does not contain fibrin. Fibrin is a protein in your blood that turns into fibrin during the clotting process. The addition of fibrin provides a boost in the healing process.

How Is PRF Obtained?

The first step is a simple blood draw from a nurse practitioner. The vile then gets placed into a PRF centrifuge where it spins the vile slowly, so to not destroy healthy blood cells or separate platelets and plasma. The result is a gel-like formula ready to be injected or stamped back into the skin with no additives.

What Areas Can PRF Help Rejuvenate?

Most commonly, PRF is used to treat:

  • Hollow under eyes

  • Dark circles under the eyes

  • Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes

  • Sunken cheeks

  • Acne scarring and discolouration

  • Hair thinning

PRF vs. Dermal Filler For Under Eyes

We see a large number of clients torn between using PRF or filler to rejuvenate their eye area. There are some key differences between these two options:

Dermal Filler- The best part about injecting filler anywhere on the face, is that the results are instant. Dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, which our body naturally produces in our skin for hydration. Fillers are well tolerated by most individuals but act as a band-aid for aging under eyes. Filler does not stimulate collagen production, so once your body has metabolized the filler (in approximately 6 months to a year), you’re back to where you started.

PRF- Because PRF is completely natural, it’s tolerated by basically everyone making it the safest option for the delicate eye area. 3 sessions minimum of PRF are recommended for best results (about a month apart from each other). While the results are not instant like with filler, PRF stimulates collagen and cell turnover making it the ideal option for actually reversing the signs of time. After desired results are obtained, a yearly maintenance treatment is recommended to uphold results and keep stimulating collagen.

PRF Microneedling For Acne Scarring, Discolouration, and Full-Face Rejuvenation

Why just target the under eyes when you can give your entire face a natural rejuvenation? One of our favourite ways to administer PRF is to microneedle it into the skin. Microneedling PRF into the skin supercharges collagen production and cell turnover to fade discolouration left behind from acne or otherwise, and promote a more youthful appearance while the addition of the plasma speeds up the healing time from regular microneedling.

PRF For Hair Loss

PRF has been proven time and time again to be incredibly effective in treating alopecia or thinning of the hair in men and women and rather quickly. PRF is strategically needled into the scalp where thinning is occurring to stimulate dormant hair follicles reversing balding and promoting hair thickening. Check out these results from only 2 sessions of PRF.
