Pre- and Post-Injection Treatment Care
Pre-care
TO PREPARE FOR THE BLOOD DRAW ASSOCIATED WITH PRP THERAPY
PRP Therapy is very safe because cells from the patient’s own blood are used, which means there are no preservatives and no chance of the body rejecting the cells. The primary risks and discomforts are related to the blood draw where there is a slight pinch to insert the needle for collection and there is a potential for bruising at the site.
During the course of your treatments, notify our staff of any changes to your medical history, health status or personal activities that may be relevant to your treatment.
Post-care for Hair Restoration
It is not necessary to make many changes in your plans today – do whatever you wish with the exception of avoiding aspirin, Advil and alcohol. It is quite normal to experience some mild tenderness and, on occasion, swelling. Not all individuals experience this, but it can occur. Please let us know immediately if you have questions or concerns. We are here to support you.
SHAMPOOING
• Please shampoo your hair the day after your procedure with any shampoo you wish. HAIR COLOURING
• It is fine to colour your hair three days after the procedure.
HATS
• Wearing a hat today is fine if you wish to. In fact, please limit sun on the area for 2 days.
SUPPLEMENTS
• Do not use blood-thinning agents such as vitamin E, vitamin A, ginko, garlic, flax, cod liver oil or essential fatty acids at least one week after your treatment.
FOODS AND CAFFEINE
• Avoid alcohol and cigarettes for the next three days.
SMOKING
• Avoid smoking for three days (if possible) – we find it makes a big difference to healing.
MEDICATIONS
• Avoid aspirin, Advil, Motrin, ibuprofen, naproxen, Voltaren and other anti-inflammatory medications for 3 days after your procedure (if possible, try avoiding for 7 days). We want inflammation to occur!
Normal expectations
Some swelling, bruising, and/or redness is normal. You may experience a sensation of stinging or tenderness at the site of injection, which may last for a few minutes to hours depending on how sensitive your skin is. Anything more than that, please call your injector.
Follow-up appointments
For best results, we recommend a minimum of 3 treatments 4-6 weeks apart.
Post-care for Facial Rejuvenation
Immediately after your PRP/PRF procedure, your practitioner may apply a face mask, moisturizer and sunscreen topically.
Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Motrin or Advil. These agents will interfere with the natural inflammatory process that is critical and responsible for your skin rejuvenation.
Use Tylenol only as needed for any soreness.
Avoid sun exposure for 3 days and, if possible, 10 days. Apply a minimum of SPF 30 every 2 hours.
Do not pick at or scratch treated skin, but instead keep it moisturized.
Avoid strenuous exercise or sweating for 24 hours due to open pores.
You may clean your face with cool water and gently pat dry no earlier than 4 hours after treatment.
Cool compresses may be applied for excessive discomfort, burning, redness or swelling.
Mineral makeup may be applied after 24 hours.
Restart regular skin care regimen in 48 hours and Retin A in 72 hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does Platelet-Rich Plasma Differs From Platelet-Rich Fibrin
Platelet-Rich Plasma is a result of double spin method to separate red blood cells from everything else in the autologous (or whole) blood and a soft spin to separate the platelets and white blood cells. The result is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), Platelet-Poor Plasma (PPP) and Red Blood Cells.
PRF is a newer method, next generation to PRP. In PRF, after the first centrifugation, the middle layer is taken—which contains less platelets but more clotting factors. This gradually forms into a fibrin network and traps in the cytokines. It is then centrifuged in a PRF centrifuge resulting in PRF, a fibrin layer containing platelets and plasma.
New studies suggest Platelet-Rich Plasma and Platelet-Rich Fibrin differ in the release of growth factors which can significantly affect the healing outcome.
PRF results have shown a continual and steady release of growth factors over a 10-day period. Alternatively, PRP may produce a short-term effects and is less desirable than a PRF whose release is slower and thus more beneficial in the long run.
How is PRF created?
PRF is created with a small sample of your own blood withdrawn from you by one of our amazing nurses. Once the sample has been taken, it is inserted and spun in a centrifuge. Blood plasma, white and red blood cells, and other growth properties bond as the sample spins, creating the PRP formula. The PRP solution is purified and the platelets are preserved, creating PRF.
Is PRF Rejuventation safe?
Yes! Since PRF derives from a sample of your own blood, there is virtually no risk of disease or severe allergic reactions.
How do the PRF treatments rejuvenate skin?
Research shows that our own Platelet Rich Fibrin has the power to heal and regenerate tissue in all areas of our body. Platelets are the cells in the blood that help tissue to heal and grow new cells. When Platelet Rich Fibrin is properly injected into specific areas of the skin, it promotes your own collagen growth, regenerates tissue, and naturally soothes and tightens the skin. Studies tell us that PRF grows new collagen and can soften sun damage and other aging skin issues.
