Frequently Asked Questions
What does “Food Intolerance” mean?
The terms ‘food allergy’, ‘food intolerance’ and ‘food sensitivity/hypersensitivity’ are often used interchangeably and are often confused, but essentially they all mean an abnormal reaction to certain foods which can manifest themselves in a number of different ways. They may result from mechanisms that involve activation of the immune system, and the subsequent production of antibodies, or reactions that are not immune-mediated.
The type of food intolerance we test for is known as IgG-mediated allergy/food intolerance/food hypersensitivity
These reactions are characterized by the production of IgG antibodies which cause chronic inflammation. They are responsible for the ‘delayed-onset’ of symptoms, which can occur several hours or days after foods are ingested.
What is the difference between an allergy and an intolerance?
A food allergy is an immune reaction that results in the production of IgE antibodies. The reactions are usually immediate and symptoms can range from rashes, swelling, violent sickness, difficulty breathing and anaphylactic shock.
Food intolerances that are immune related result in the production of IgG antibodies and symptoms are usually not as severe and may not appear for several days.
What types of symptoms could I see from IgG Food Intolerances?
Symptoms include: anxiety, depression, IBS, headaches/migraines, fatigue, hypertension, asthma, joint pain, chronic rhinitis, arthritis, weight problems, fibromyalgia, eczema, acne and other inflammatory skin conditions.
What can I expect to see in my result report?
Each food will be given a numerical value according to the strength of antibody reaction. Depending upon the antibody level detected, foods are categorized and colour-coded as: ELEVATED, BORDERLINE or NORMAL.
Will you help me interpret and understand my results?
Absolutely! We provide a detailed explanation of your results, your symptoms, and how to move forward with confidence.
